Paramyxo wordt veroorzaakt door het paramyxovirus. Dit zeer besmettelijk duivenvirus werd in België voor het eerst vastgesteld in 1983. In de daaropvolgende jaren veroorzaakte het virus grote schade op vele duivenkolonies, waarbij de kombinatie van zenuwsymptomen en waterige uitwerpselen kenmerkend waren voor de ziekte. Ondanks de beschikbaarheid van goede vaccins is het virus vijftien jaar later nog steeds oorzaak van heel wat ellende.
